How To Get Gorgeous Skin, According To Cameron Diaz’s Go-To Make-Up Artist

A beauty trend that never goes out of style? Luminous skin. Getting there isn’t always as easy as it looks on social media, but taking note of make-up artist Gucci Westman’s advice is a great place to start. Westman’s starry client list includes Cameron Diaz, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Lawrence and Anne Hathaway  – so what she doesn’t know about achieving glowy skin isn’t worth knowing.

Westman is also the founder of Westman Atelier, which offers a selection of luxurious formulas that make creating super-healthy skin a breeze. “I created Westman Atelier to show that creating elevated and enhanced skin doesn’t have to be hard,” she says. “I wanted to create a complexion system where you could learn how to intuitively create this kind of skin without feeling intimidated. When make-up is opaque, it looks heavy. My approach is to have lucency, and an underlying feeling that the skin is alive and beautiful.”

Below, she shares her top tips on how to create the most gorgeous skin going in five easy steps.

1.Start with skincare

“Begin by assessing whether your skin is feeling harmonious – its wellbeing is an important first step,” Westman says. “See if there are any skin issues you want to figure out using skincare. Of course, sometimes you’ve tried everything and your skin is still acting up, but generally I like to exfoliate and apply moisturiser. Plus, there are so many devices that you can use at home. They’re expensive initially, but you end up saving in the long run.”

2.A good workman… uses tools

“Excellent tools are like an extension of a make-up artist – using brushes makes for a more refined application because you can really get into the corners of the skin, and be much more precise. It might be a little more cumbersome to pull out a brush and clean it afterwards, but it’s worth it because the quality of your skin will be much better. My spot-check brush is magic.”

3.Work on problem areas

“The key to beautiful skin is being able to warm up, brighten and manipulate base make-up so that the skin still looks like skin – and doing so in a way that doesn’t feel heavy or look like it’s been applied. Even if you have problematic skin, you should focus on covering just areas of concern, rather than the whole face. Aim to respect the tones in your face – when you make skin monochromatic, problem areas appear enhanced, so any blemish bumps, for example, will appear more raised. Use a little bit of product and be light of touch.”

4. Add colour back into the skin

“I like using two shades of foundation – one slightly lighter than the skin tone, and the other the same shade – to create tonality. Add colour back in, with bronzers or blusher, wherever you like it – the higher points of the face usually have a little more warmth, whereas you wouldn’t want more colour close to the nose, around the mouth, chin or centre of the forehead. Focus on the areas that are clear and elevate them, and generally keep colour upwards and outwards on the face.”

5. Frame your face

“A brow product should be one of the most important products in your routine because eyebrows really frame the face. I recommend filling in the areas that need it and then use a spoolie to brush it over to make it look more natural. That’s how you make it look like your real brows. After that, you can play up your eyes or lips.”
